Virtual World: Second Life

Hi there! Today I will talk about Second Life, which is one of the Virtual World environments. For this, first of all, let's take a look at what "Virtual Reality and Virtual World" are.

Although these two terms are thought to be the same, they are different from each other. Virtual Reality (VR) refers to the technologies that use VR headsets to produce sounds, images and other sensations that replicate a real environment or create an imaginary world. It is a way of immersing users in a completely virtual world. Everything felt with virtual reality is a 3D world created by a computer. When the environment is artificially created, the user is convinced that the real world is disabled. Virtual reality is widely used to recreate places that exist or not in real life with a computer at least in 3D and provide a real-like experience. In the defined space created with virtual reality, education, observation, testing, entertainment and treatment activities can be carried out widely. On the other hand, Virtual World (VW) is an online environment that allows you to simultaneously and independently explore the world thanks to the avatars you create via your computer screen. Second Life (SL) is one of the 3D virtual worlds. What you can do in this created artificial world is limited only by your imagination. You start exploring the virtual world by creating your own avatar in Second Life, and you can customize the avatar as you wish. You can teleport and travel to different places at any time, thus you can catch the opportunity to interact with other people from different cultures in those places. Just like in real life, you can make friends and have a social environment thanks to online chat, voice and video calls. At the same time, it is possible to realize all kinds of fiction in the Second Life environment, from buying real estate to designing and university education. On the other hand, this program contributes to foreign language development, offers distance education opportunities, and supports learner autonomy. For example, by having conversations with native speakers, you can improve your pronunciation and speaking skills, and learn new words and grammatical structures. Through these interactive conversations, your self-confidence can increase and you can eagerly want to be a part of this environment. It is possible to record these conversations and save them for later. It is also a very useful program for teachers to keep track of their students' progress on foreign language learning.
